Parents: Three Easy Steps to Getting the Break You Deserve…

The best compliment I get as a mom of twins, is when people tell me how patient I am with my boys. But a series of extremely busy days can make even the sweetest Saint of a mother lose it a bit!

I like to keep the boys busy, either building blocks and playing trains inside or playing outside in the fresh air.

Helicopter rides in the mall, story time at the library or a wonderful trip to the Science center are things that fill our days. Nothing gives me more joy than seeing the look of wonder on their faces or hearing the squeals of delight as they discover something new.

But being so active and fully engaged all the time can take its toll if you don’t factor in time for yourself, whether it be a five minute meditation, a walk around the neighborhood or a quick cup of tea.

But what if you can’t get completely away for “me” time? Make sure you do something that makes YOU happy, that you can all do together. This is why I love family walks so much – we get out in the fresh air, exercise and get a chance to connect with one another.

After a particularly busy few days, prepping for a big party, having a job interview, having a sick kid and husband, and still having to take care of the healthy kid and the dog, I needed a “me” day. I felt like I might be getting the bug that the rest of my family had gotten, so with my husbands blessing I organized to have a sitter arrive in the morning to help me with my day.

As luck would have it, I felt okay in the morning and managed to squeeze in a much needed relaxation day for me: going to lunch, a movie and buying myself a fantastic bag (at a fantastic price – gotta love a stylish bargain!)

So how do you make this work for you?

  1. Plan: Figure out a day or an afternoon that you can dedicate just to yourself and do the things you most enjoy. The one thing I miss the most about my life before kids is going to the movies whenever I pleased.
  2. Prepare: Call the sitter, the aunt or the neighbor to set up coverage for your relaxation time. Book any appointments that you need for your day, whether it be a golf lesson or lip wax!
  3. Relax: Now that your moment is here – relinquish the controls, and run out the door as fast as you can. Or if your relaxation is taking place in your home, make sure everyone knows that area is off limits, so you can be alone for a little while.

And once you’ve had your moment of rejuvenation, be sure to let those around you know how much it is appreciated.  A kind word of thanks goes a long way.

Thank you Hubby! I am ready to be a great mom and wife again :)

I don’t get enough “me” time. Instead hubby and I call a sitter for “us” time.

  5. Pam says:

I lived for nap time too—now they are at school so I have lots of time to myself–well really to blog =)

  6. You’re in the hardest season too. The boys need constant supervision as they test boundaries and explore new, dangerous concepts. You need that break!

Time spent with your children is priceless, but parents can also appreciate just how precious a little “me” time is. Every Mum and Dad needs, and when they get it – appreciate it, some time off. I think it’s great if you can get away from the kids as a couple for date night or for the ladies out there having your nails done, or going to bed for a well deserved break…. Whatever it is you choose to do for your “Me time” to really be a success, for you to truely relax/switch off, you have to feel comfortable. For that you have to feel confident that your children are being well looked after. So whenever you look at taking some “me time”, make sure the child care is with a previously used favourite… uncle Pete!

Wise words, Sista – it is always good to use your tried and true favorites for baby sitting :)
