Bad Mommy Moment You Think will Never Happen to You

What bad mommy moment, could possibly involve the following components:

twin toddlers, a parked car and a set of car keys?

Yup, my twins got locked in the car. I am so embarrassed to even admit that THIS bad mommy moment happened to me!

Cameron was playing with the keys while I put his brother Mason in the car. I closed the door and tried to open mine, only it didn’t budge. I realized in that instant that we were in trouble, but I tried all the locks anyway.

When I got around to Cameron’s side he was all smiles. When I asked him to open the door with the button, he pointed down on the ground between the seats. He looked extremely mischievous in that moment, let me tell you! I had (stupidly) given him my keys to hold, as he likes to push the button on the keys that makes the horn sound (so that you can find your car easily).

Well apparently he hit the lock button too, and when I put Mason in and closed the door I sealed them in there!

Thank heavens my hubby was home with the spare key and he was able to come rescue us within 15 minutes!! (Thanks hubby!)

But in those 15 minutes the kids went from this:

Mason slightly worse for wear - Cameron not happy poor kid.

As I was writing this it hit me that this isn’t the first time something like this happened to us. But last time at least I had the dog, Carrie Bradshaw, to blame, and it was much funnier! (Read about it here). When I searched back in my blog for the post, I realized it was almost a year ago to the day. Oh please Lord, let this not be a yearly occurrence! Please let me learn from my mistake THIS time!!!

I guess I have no advice to give, since I clearly am not clever enough to avoid this situation TWICE!

All I can say is that if you don’t think it can happen to you (I hope you are right) but think again, because it probably will 😉 LOL

And hopefully your phone will be on the outside with you and not inside with the kiddos!

  1. Oh Leigh,
I locked the kids in the car before — thankfully, Nathan was old enough to unbuckle, climb to the front seat (child locks on the back doors, you know) and unlock the door for me. Whew!

So you can feel better, I have allowed ALL THREE of my children to fall, once each, from their high chairs. I have no idea how or why, but that was my achilles heel. My husband, gracefully — sure gracefully, fell down the stairs once with each of our kids. It’s crazy. But you are not alone!!!

    • Twin Mom says:

Oh no! The stairs!! Luckily I haven’t done that yet – glad no one was hurt! Thanks for making me feel better :) You always do!

  2. Monica Turner says:

Lol! Honestly, isn’t that a ‘Rite of Passage’ to Mommy hood?? :). I know MY Mom locked me in the car- AND, my Dad left me and Tommy Stafford at the Grocery Store once!! :)

  3. Mary S. Morrow says:

Relax. It happens to most moms. I did it with the engine running, back before there were push button remotes and/or cellphones. I got in with a coat hanger. Bad moms are moms who make bad decisions and are selfish. Mistakes do not count against you. Making mistakes and problem-solving your way out of them teaches kids to think and to be forgiving of themselves as well as others. Your status as awesome mom is not tarnished.

    • Twin Mom says:

Phew! Glad my reputation is still hanging in there – it was quite the day. I love your perspective of them learning from the mistakes we make. And by the way, Go McGuivure with those hanger skills! lol!

  4. Twin Mom says:

Monica I think it must be! I have locked Cameron twice and Mason once! And talk about rite of passage – today I checked a diaper and got poop on two fingers – didn’t even phase me lol!
Your parents sound perfect – just like me!

  5. Theresa says:

Whoops! I think every mom has made a mistake like that once or twice in her day. Mine actually got all the way out of the house, across the street into the park, with our new puppy in tow, all in the few minutes it took me to run her bath water. Bad mommy moment for sure!

  6. Christy says:

Your not a bad mommy, these types of events happen to the best of us. I’ve managed to lock my keys in the truck before and had to call a locksmith to come open my car for me.

  7. Glad that your hubby was around with the spare key. What a scare it must have been for you. I haven’t experience it yet but this yr the eldest locked the car with the engine running and both keys inside. Had to call a locksmith and waste $60 to get it opened.

  8. rhonda says:

Oh no! You must have been a nervous wreck in that moment! I’ve had a similar experience, and I thought I was going to start crying. In fact, I almost did. Please don’t beat yourself up. It’s so good for us to share – it reminds us that we can only do our best, and sometimes these things happen. They’ll be something to chuckle about. If we can get past that urge to cry!! lol!

    • Twin Mom says:

Yup, I am always chuckling raising twins – if I didn’t I would be crying all the time 😉 No it’s not that bad lol!

  9. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the husband wouldn’t let me drive, haha! :)

  10. OUPA says:

Oh dear. Thankfully all ended well.

  11. I think everyone has done this. This is just your rite of passage as a Mom;)

  12. Hi Leigh,

So my main reason for buying the Ford when we needed a new car was the keypad on the drivers door. Enter the secret code, get into the car…

    • Twin Mom says:

OH MY GOODNESS! I need a Ford right now! That would save me even if my phone was in the car! Lucky you – I am jealous 😉

  13. Sista says:

Sista…..everyone makes mistakes, you’re only human, but it’s what you learn from your mistakes that matter!!! And NO you really are NOT a bad Mummy, and totally agree with Mary. You are also my sister and I have seen you in many a “mummy moments” and the one thing I know to be true is that you ALWAYS put your children first and always have their best interests at heart. As your big sister, I have seen you grow as a Mum, and I’m so very proud of all that you have achieved, I love you.
