A friend recently asked me for some guidance as to what to buy for her baby due later this year.
Checklist for Selecting Your Baby Gear
- Function: Try out your items – especially the larger items. It’s important that you can navigate these items with one hand, since you often have the other one full of something…perhaps the baby?
- Safety Ratings: Check the consumer reports and safety recalls before buying the items. Often just an Internet search will provide the information you seek.
- Style:We all have our own personal style – don’t feel like you have to give this up! Find something that you love because you will be looking at it A LOT!
Gear to Help You Get Around:
Stroller: My sister-in-law gave me the best stroller advice. She said “Don’t waste your money buying something you don’t love. This is the one item to splurge on – buy the best one you can afford.” This advice came after she bought three strollers because she didn’t want to splurge and she didn’t get the one that best fit her needs. Eventually she did get the one she wanted and she was soooo much happier with that! We bought the Baby Jogger Citi Mini Double stroller – it fits through standard doors and is easy to fold up. We love it! But you don’t need to buy this straight away – your baby will fit (with blankets, padding or the extra attachment) because the seat is quite large.
We also got the Baby Trend Snap n Go (Double for the twinsies but they have them in single). This item was fantastic, because the car seat just pops right into the stand and away you go. It’s super slim line and light weight. Great for trips to the malls and the best part is that you don’t need to wake your baby to put them in it. You literally just Snap and go! You can actually get this first and wait to get the bigger stroller till they are older. At first I didn’t want to “waste” my money on this because we loved our larger stroller, but it was really key for quick trips, and it was well worth the money. I actually felt like I should have gotten this one sooner!
(Random Baby Gear Item: See the little monkey on the car seat above – that covers the straps/ belts and makes it more comfy for baby. Also when they spit up in the car seat it is easy to clean those covers instead of worry about cleaning the straps. You can get those at Walmart or Target I believe).
You can’t go wrong with car seats – again, it comes down to personal style and of course safety ratings. I had heard wonderful things about Graco, so that’s what we got. The Graco Infant 35 Snug n Ride car seat, because we were having twins and this car seat could work for very small (5lb ) babies.
We got the Baby Bjorn – most of my friends swore by it. It was very comfortable, but we rarely used ours. I think it’s because we had two babies to carry so the stroller was easier for us to get around. I have also heard great things about the moby wrap, but I have never used them myself.
My biggest piece of advice is get something that you like. There are so many pro’s and con’s to each product out there, that it can really get overwhelming. The truth is you can’t go wrong (or not VERY wrong). If in doubt check the safety rating because all the rest is really about function and style.
*** Please note that these are my opinions based on the experience raising my twins. I was not reimbursed for writing about the products in this post (although I would happily accept money from them! 😉 I hope you found this helpful.)
